🎃 Halloween Spooktacular | Ruby Redstarr at No Man’s Land — Event Photography by KungFuBreakfast
Is it not Halloween anymore? Maybe it’s because I just went to a Halloween party over the weekend—but I refuse to believe spooky season is almost over. Where I come from, Halloween doesn’t end when November hits. Around these parts, it lingers like the aftertaste of forbidden candy… possibly until New Year’s, judging by the amount of dark and delicious content I’ve shot lately.
Today’s spectral tale takes us to the evening before All Hallows’ Eve: Ruby Redstarr’s Halloween Spooktacular. That’s right—my good friend and resident enchantress Ruby Redstarr, alongside the fine folks at No Man’s Land Cocktail Parlor & Eatery, hosted a Halloween party that would make even the spirits stir. And yours truly? I was counted among the VIPs, naturally.
I’d never been to No Man’s Land before—I rarely drink these days, so bars aren’t exactly on my usual quest map. Color me surprised when I arrived to find this whimsical little bar tucked inside a supermarket shopping center in Fort Lauderdale like some hidden realm of revelry. Ruby worked her magic on the décor, conjuring up just the right ambience. I was treated to musical classics from Bauhaus and Korn, cocktail potions I didn’t imbibe but deeply respected, and most importantly—spellbinding performances by Brooke Raquel and Claudia.
This was my first time meeting either performer. Despite the venue being ear-splittingly loud, both were incredibly sweet. Each of them performed lyra—aerial hoop suspended high above the crowd—and I’m just going to say it: these may be the best lyra photos I’ve taken to date. My experience shooting aerial hoop is surprisingly limited (a private house party last year, then Burning Man later that season), but something about this night… the lighting, the energy, the raw presence… it all aligned. These images hit differently, like the moon landing just right on Samhain Eve.
Another highlight? Photographing Ruby tending the bar like a potion master. There’s also a cameo from my friend and fellow photographer/videographer Neo Oliveira (aka Vizgem)—always good to have another image conjurer in the wild. And yes—I even grabbed a few shots of my own fit. Because if the venue doesn’t provide a sufficiently reflective mirror for the local Wizard, future generations may never know how I looked roaming the mortal plane that night. Thankfully, No Man’s Land’s one bathroom featured a full-length mirror strong enough to contain the magic.
🖤 Event photography. Alternative nightlife. Aerial performance. Fort Lauderdale magic.
If Halloween is your aesthetic, welcome to the realm. Stay tuned—spooky season isn’t done with us yet.
